The Benefits of Combining a Purified Native Collagen Matrix and PHMB

The Role of Collagen

PuraPly™ Antimicrobial utilizes purified Type 1 collagen, a naturally occurring building block in healing.1,2

This technology is inherently biocompatible and strong, as it retains the native collagen matrix structure that is then layered and cross-linked.3 Native collagen matrices have been shown to quench protease activity and support healing.4

The Importance of PHMB

PHMB is a well-studied antimicrobial agent that exhibits low cytotoxicity, high tissue compatibility,5 and has demonstrated no bacterial resistance in vitro or clinically.5-9

Unlike other antimicrobials, PHMB does not impair wound healing and is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.5 The positively charged PHMB works by:

  • Binding to negatively charged bacterial cell membrane5
  • Disrupting the cell membrane, leading to cell death5
  • Blocking microbial attachments, helping to prevent biofilm formation5
